The SAVE Act is a new piece of voter ID legislation that seeks to prevent illegal aliens from casting ballots in the 2024 presidential election. A law that Donald Trump strongly supports would make it mandatory for election workers to check voters’ citizenship.
Speaker Mike Johnson said this bill’s vote might rank among the most consequential that Congress has ever taken. Under the measure, passports and birth certificates would be clearly mentioned as other forms of identification that would be accepted.
Despite passing with the support of five Democrats (221-198), the measure may die in the Senate, which is now controlled by Democrats. Additionally, President Biden has indicated his intention to veto the bill.
Johnson asked if it was fair for foreigners and illegal aliens to pick who serves in the White House, the House, and the Senate, or should Americans alone decide?
Since non-citizens are already in violation of the law and face the possibility of deportation or incarceration, the bill would prohibit them from voting in federal and state elections. According to current federal law, documentary evidence of citizenship is banned for federal elections.
The Speaker warned that Joe Biden and the Democrats would have orchestrated a historic intrusion into any democratic nation’s affairs if the measure were not passed into law.
A voter presenting evidence of U.S. citizenship will be required to provide documents as stated in the law, which revises the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. In state and municipal elections, governments are currently limited in their ability to demand evidence of citizenship when registering to vote.
Some of the goals of the bill are making it more difficult to register to vote without US citizenship or photo ID, removing illegal immigrants from voter rolls in all 50 states, making it illegal for election officials to register non-citizens to vote, imposing punishments of as much as five years in prison for those officials, and requiring proof of citizenship for overseas voters.
According to reports, the Democrats and the White House are attempting to intimidate legal voters by fabricating quotes from the new law.
