(NewsGlobal.com)- In a horrific event in New York City, a school bus flipped over resulting in three dozen people sent to the hospital. The New York Police Department stated that the police responded to the incident just before 6 a.m. when a school bus overturned in the area of Bruckner Boulevard and Hutchinson Parkway in the Bronx.
The incident reportedly sent 36 injured adults to the hospital for treatment. Only three people sustained serious injuries, while the rest only sustained minor injuries. It is unclear why there were no children on the bus, and it is unclear where they were going.
Footage of the accident shows the bus on its side on the exit ramp. The driver was the only person on board who refused to receive medical treatment. He was also issued a summons for dangerous driving a senior NYPD official told NBC New York.
Mayor Eric Adams released a statement confirming that the school bus was contracted by New York City’s Department of Education and that schools will reach out to families that were affected.
“The safety of every member of our community is our top priority and thankfully, at this time, no major injuries have been sustained on board. Additionally, no students were on the bus,” Adams said.
The bus is attached to the company “Consolidated Bus Transit,” that offers students transportation to schools, line run and charter buses.
The circumstances of the crash, where the bus was headed, and why no students were on it, were not immediately available. Consolidated Bus Transit issued a statement saying that its safety officers are investigating the incident.
“Right now our immediate concern is for the safety and well-being of our employees,” the statement said. “Consolidated prides itself as a safe and reliable transportation company providing transportation services in New York City for over 40 years. We will work with the police and Department of Education in determining the cause of the accident.”
