Elton John’s Severe Infection Causes Limited Vision in One Eye

Legendary singer Sir Elton John has reportedly lost most of the vision in one of his eyes after dealing with an eye infection.

The 77-year-old singer posted about his health issues on social media on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and said he has spent the last few months at home “recuperating” from the infection. He said he was grateful to his family and the “team of doctors and nurses” who cared for him over several weeks.

Elton writes that he spent his summer fighting “a severe eye infection” that impacted vision in one of his eyes. He said he is healing but that the process is “extremely slow” and that it would be a while before his eyesight returns to normal, adding that he’s “feeling positive” overall about his progress.

Last year, the legendary singer retired from touring and performed his last show in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 8, 2023. Although retired from touring, Elton played a few songs during his Oscars viewing party attended by several celebrity guests. The annual viewing party is to raise money for AIDs awareness and treatment, and this year brought in over £8.4 million.

Elton also reportedly plans on producing a musical based on his catalog of hits. David Furnish, the singer’s husband, told reporters that it’s an idea they “are always looking at,” but that if they end up doing the show, it would have to be something “really innovative… exciting and different.” Furnish said between “two other musicals” in the works, he and Elton are “quite busy” and that project would have to wait. The two musicals he was referring to are The Devil Wears Prada, which will premier in Plymouth next summer, and the musical Tammy Faye, which will begin showing on Broadway by the end of the year.

Aside from the eye infection, the singer has also been recovering from a recent knee replacement surgery and was seen struggling to walk on the red carpet during his event in March. According to Furnish, Elton is also due to have surgery on his other knee in preparation for his upcoming work in the Summer of 2025.
