Newsom’s Defensive Strategy
In the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged Southern California, Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a controversial step to defend his administration’s response. Facing criticism for his handling of the crisis, Newsom launched a dedicated website aimed at combating what he calls “misinformation” about the state’s wildfire strategy.
“A lot of misinformation out there. Just launched a new site to ensure the public has access to fact-based data around the Southern CA wildfires,” Governor Gavin Newsom said.
Misinformation or just inconvenient information?
The website, which provides so-called “fact-based data” on the Southern California wildfires, also includes a donation button for the California Fire Foundation. However, this seemingly benevolent gesture has sparked controversy due to its connection with ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform.
Fundraising Controversy
The decision to link the wildfire information site to ActBlue, a Democratic Political Action Committee (PAC) that has raised over $16 billion since 2004, has raised eyebrows among critics. While donations are intended to support firefighters and affected communities, the use of a partisan fundraising platform during a natural disaster has been questioned.
“Not a cent of these donations go to Gavin Newsom or his PAC. Gov. Newsom is proud to have raised $450,000 for the Fire Foundation in small dollar contributions during these fires and is grateful for the people across the nation who have come together to help Californians in their time of need,” Nathan Click, Newsom Spokesperson Nathan Click said.
Un. Freaking. Real.
Despite assurances that no donations go to Newsom or his PAC, the governor’s team has had to clarify repeatedly that the funds raised are solely for the benefit of firefighters and affected communities. ActBlue typically charges a 3.95% processing fee but reportedly waived it for fire donations.
The launch of Newsom’s website also comes against a backdrop of heightened political tensions, particularly with President-elect Trump. Trump has openly criticized Newsom’s environmental initiatives and handling of the wildfires, calling for the governor’s resignation.
“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump said.
In response to the criticism, Newsom has invited Trump to visit the fire scene, urging against politicizing the tragedy. The governor maintains that California has not cut its firefighting budget and has increased forest management efforts, contrary to claims made by his detractors.
Newsom should be ashamed of himself.
