ICC Issues Controversial Arrest Warrants
The International Criminal Court has taken a significant step by issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The court alleges their involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, relating to actions from October 8, 2023, to May 20, 2024. The charges include using starvation as a method of warfare, intentionally attacking civilians, murder, and persecution.
The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber rejected Israel’s challenges to its jurisdiction and found reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant deprived Gaza’s civilian population of essential survival items. These items include food, water, medicine, fuel, and electricity, as well as hindering humanitarian aid. The warrants come amid a reported death toll of over 44,000 in Gaza, including thousands of children, following Israel’s offensive after the October 7 Hamas-led attacks.
Israel’s Response and International Reaction
Israel has vehemently denied the war crime accusations and does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction. The Israeli government is urging its allies not to enforce the warrants. Netanyahu’s office called the allegations “absurd and false,” while Israeli President Isaac Herzog accused the ICC of siding with terrorism.

The decision has caused international controversy, with the United States denouncing the warrants. President Joe Biden called the ICC’s decision “outrageous.” However, some U.S. allies have pledged to enforce them, creating potential diplomatic rifts.

The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, has since reminded EU member states of their obligation to enforce the warrants. This stance has led to growing tensions, particularly with the United States.
Senator Lindsey Graham, meanwhile, warned that the U.S. might impose economic sanctions on allies that attempt to enforce the warrants.
“Israel’s in a fight for its very life,” Graham said on Fox News’ “Hannity” program on Nov. 22. “And we live in an upside-down world where the Prime Minister of Israel and the Defense Minister of Israel are being prosecuted by a court in Belgium.”
