On Wednesday, the judge presiding over the civil fraud trial against Donald Trump vented his irritation at the former president’s attorneys, calling their questioning of a witness “repetitive and ludicrous.”
Trump, widely seen as the Republican frontrunner for the presidency in 2024, has denied any wrongdoing and called the probe a political witch hunt.
On the third day of trial in a lawsuit brought by the New York attorney general’s office that may destroy Trump’s corporate empire, the two lawyers exchanged harsh words. According to the case, Trump inflated his wealth by billions to get better loan terms and insurance policies.
After Trump’s social media criticism of the judge’s senior law clerk, Justice Arthur Engoron ordered a gag order on public utterances against court workers.
This bench trial is being presided over by the angry Engoron; a jury will not be convening. He has already punished Trump’s legal team for what he considers to be their baseless claims.
On Wednesday, Engoron voiced his displeasure with one of Trump’s lawyers for repeatedly asking the same questions to Trump’s former accountant over the years.
For the third day in a row, Trump has spent his mornings in court and afternoons speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, where he has repeatedly blasted New York Attorney General Letitia James and Engoron. He claims they are corrupt and that the whole case is a hoax.
Trump claimed on Wednesday that the biased Engoron has already decided what he will do.
Trump, his two adult sons, and ten of Trump’s companies were found guilty of fraud by Engoron last week for exaggerating the worth of their assets. Businesses that owned Trump’s crown jewels, such as Trump Tower and 40 Wall Street, had their corporate registrations revoked by the judge. The appointment of receivers to manage the liquidation of specific organizations was mentioned.
On Wednesday, Trump’s legal team appealed the decision.
The damages trial is anticipated to last until the middle of December.
Democrat Letitia James demands that Trump and his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, be permanently barred from operating businesses in New York and that Trump and the Trump Organization be banned from commercial real estate for five years.
Trump has been charged with four felonies, including paying hush money to a pornstar, mishandling secret materials after leaving office, and trying to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied misconduct in all cases against him. In addition, he will be on trial for civil damages in January for defaming a writer who falsely accused him of rape.
