At a Glance
- The approval rating for Democrats in Congress has plummeted to a record low of 19 percent in a new national poll.
- Deep internal divisions and leadership disputes are tearing the Democratic Party apart.
- The recent resignation of influential union leader Randi Weingarten from the DNC highlights the leadership crisis.
- The rise of progressive insurgents, like NYC mayoral primary winner Zohran Mamdani, is challenging the party’s establishment.
A Party in Freefall
Congressional Democrats are suffering from an approval rating that has hit rock bottom. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows their approval has fallen to an unimaginable 19 percent—an all-time low since tracking began in 2009. The numbers are even more damning within their own ranks, with a majority of Democrats (52%) disapproving of the job their own party’s representatives are doing in Congress.
This collapse in support reflects a deep frustration with a party that appears politically adrift, lacking a coherent message or a clear leader for the future. As Quinnipiac’s polling analyst put it, the numbers for Democrats are “flat out terrible.”
A Crisis of Leadership and a Progressive Insurgency
The party’s internal divisions are now spilling into public view. In June, Randi Weingarten, the influential president of the American Federation of Teachers, resigned from the Democratic National Committee (DNC), stating she was “out of step” with the current leadership of DNC Chair Ken Martin. Her departure is a massive blow to the party’s relationship with organized labor, a cornerstone of its coalition.
At the same time, the party’s establishment is under attack from a growing progressive insurgency. The recent victory of socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary signals a significant shift away from the party’s moderate old guard and exposes deep ideological rifts.
The Road to Irrelevance?
The consequences of this chaos are already clear. Fundraising is lagging, and incumbents are facing a wave of primary challenges from the far left. The disillusionment is palpable. A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 62 percent of Democratic voters are calling for new leadership.
If these calls go unanswered, the party risks a historic electoral defeat in the 2026 midterms. While Democrats are busy fighting their own civil war, Republicans are capitalizing on the disarray. If the party cannot reconcile its warring factions, it could be facing years in the political wilderness.
