(NewsGlobal.com)- A lawsuit has been filed by Michelle Obama’s brother and his wife against the University School of Milwaukee. They say the private school kicked their sons out in retaliation for raising concerns about racial and socioeconomic bias.
Craig and Kelly Robinson’s two sons, 12 and 10 years old, are being blocked from enrolling in the University School of Milwaukee. The school says the parents are to blame, but the Robinsons say there’s a more extensive pattern of behavior.
In Kelly Robinson’s words: “These were straight-A kids.”
The Robinsons were worried that their two sons were taking home lessons from school that they shouldn’t have been taking home with them.
Craig Robinson said that they kept seeing people use racial and ethnic stereotypes and they were in assignments. There was a lot of talk about plantations and other things.
The lawsuit also talks about an “Underground Railroad” simulation in which it says students were told to act like “runaway slaves.” In contrast, USM faculty members were “slave catchers.” This practice was only stopped “after multiple students of color, USM parents, Black alumni, and others protested the insensitivity and lack of appropriateness of this practice,” the court document says.
The Robinsons say they made two complaints to the private school’s bias incident reporting system in January and March of 2021, but they wouldn’t say how many or when they did it.
Craig Robinson said they could write down a list of microaggressions that they performed, but the real problem is that they took it out on two young boys.
They wrote two letters of complaint to the school in April of 2021 and asked that their fifth-grader go somewhere else. In June, USM wrote back and said that their sons were expelled.
In the letter, the Robinson family is told that their trust in and respect for USM has gone down the drain and that they have been disrespectful and very demanding toward teachers and administrators.
Craig Robinson said that he doesn’t believe that and is open to any kind of investigation from anyone. There is no reason why they would pick on us and our two young children, who had nothing to do with this.
The Robinsons started a website called DontTrustUSM.com. It had a call to action, and it was a place for unsubstantiated anecdotes from people who had similar grievances.
Gladys Mitchell-Walthour wrote a blog post about pulling her then 4-year-old daughter from USM. She said she saw sexism and racism. Four years ago, she wrote about it.
She claimed a teacher said it isn’t racist to call a student a monkey.
They hope that the school will learn from this.
Mitchell-Walthour said we need to get rid of the administration. We need to get rid of the teachers, and we need to get rid of the administration. She hopes this school can use this as an opportunity to see what good can come out of such bad things.
All parents of students at USM were sent a letter saying that enrollment decisions did not come from complaints.
“We can not tolerate persistently disrespectful, bullying, or harassing behavior directed at our devoted and hardworking teachers and administrators,” the letter said.
The letter said that deciding not to renew or cancel an enrollment contract is the last resort.
The letter said that our “Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” programming is very important to us, and we will not tolerate discrimination of any kind.
It’s hard to imagine a school going up against an Obama in-law with unsubstantiated or exaggerated claims.
