(NewsGlobal.com)- A recent poll shows Ron DeSantis beating the pants off of former President Trump in Florida.
According to the USA Today/Suffolk University poll released last week, in a hypothetical 2024 primary match-up, 48 percent of Florida Republican voters support Ron DeSantis while only 40 percent support Donald Trump.
This isn’t entirely surprising since DeSantis is wildly popular among Florida Republicans for his unwavering positions on illegal immigration, parents’ rights, and his defiance of anti-freedom COVID policies. But it is a significant shift from January when USA Today/Suffolk had Trump beating DeSantis in Florida 47 percent to 40 percent.
According to Dave Paleologos, the director of Suffolk University’s Political Research Center, DeSantis holding a significant lead in Florida doesn’t necessarily mean he would top Trump in other states. But it is a possible indication that there has been a shift in preference among some Republican voters.
National polls still show Trump leading DeSantis overall. But national polls are meaningless since primaries are conducted state-by-state and not nationally.
The Suffolk poll found DeSantis leading Trump by over 20 points among Florida Republicans earning $50,000 or more, 55 percent to 33 percent. Among those earning less than $50,000, Trump tops DeSantis 53 percent to 36 percent.
DeSantis has a 30-point advantage over Trump among college-educated Republicans, 60 percent to 30 percent while Trump is favored among non-college-educated Republicans 57 percent to DeSantis’ 27 percent.
The Suffolk poll also showed both Trump and DeSantis beating Joe Biden in Florida, with DeSantis crushing Biden 52 percent to 44 percent and Trump leading Biden by only 3 points, 47 percent to 44 percent.
