A “Bloody Fourth of July” in Chicago
While the rest of the nation celebrated Independence Day, the city of Chicago was once again plunged into a weekend of carnage. At least 55 people were shot, six of them fatally, in another “bloody Fourth of July weekend” in what has become a notorious hot spot for violent crime.
The violence was widespread, with victims ranging from teenagers to older adults, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the crime wave plaguing the Democrat-run city.
A Weekend of Carnage
The holiday bloodshed began on Wednesday night with a horrific mass shooting outside the Artis Lounge in the city’s upscale River North neighborhood. In that incident, gunmen in a drive-by vehicle opened fire on a crowd, killing four people and wounding 14 others.
The violence continued throughout the weekend. As reported by WGN News, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the throat and killed in the Marynook neighborhood late Friday night. In a separate incident in Englewood, a 36-year-old man was fatally shot in the head.
A City Under Siege
The Chicago Police Department, which has been stretched thin by the ongoing crime wave, is investigating the string of shootings. However, as noted by Fox News, no arrests have been made in any of the weekend’s six homicides.
In addition to the fatal shootings, there were several other mass casualty events. In the Back of the Yards neighborhood, a shooting at a gathering wounded seven people, leaving five of them in serious condition. The relentless violence is the latest chapter in a grim story for Chicago, which has seen over 200 homicides so far this year. The office of Mayor Brandon Johnson has not yet commented on the holiday weekend’s violence, leaving anxious residents demanding action and answers.
