A Political Earthquake in Nigeria
In a political maneuver that is set to reshape Nigerian politics, the country’s two main opposition leaders, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have joined forces to create a new, unified coalition. Both men, who were the leading opposition candidates in the 2023 presidential election, have left their respective parties to join the smaller African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The goal of the new alliance is to present a single, formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election. The move is being called one of the most significant political realignments in Nigeria’s recent history, and it includes not only Abubakar and Obi but also other prominent defectors from their former parties and even from the ruling APC.
Amending the “Mistake” of 2023
The formation of the new alliance is a direct response to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election. In that contest, President Tinubu won with just 37% of the vote. Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), finished second with 29%, while Peter Obi, of the Labour Party (LP) was a close third with 25%.
As noted by political analyst Shehu Iliyasu, the opposition has clearly learned from this result. “Both Atiku [Abubakar] and Obi felt they came so close in 2023 and would have maybe won on a joint ticket,” Iliyasu told the Nigerian news site Nairaland. “So they want to amend their mistake by working together this time around.”
The Road to 2027
The new coalition hopes to capitalize on widespread discontent with the current government and prevent what they see as Nigeria’s slide toward a one-party state. However, the path to victory in 2027 is still fraught with challenges.
My fellow Nigerians,
Today, I address you with a sense of responsibility, as we navigate through these times. The protests, which turned violent in some parts of our nation, have caused unimaginable pain and loss, particularly to the families of those who have tragically lost… pic.twitter.com/mSR9zHc4Lb

As noted by the BBC, the power of incumbency in Nigerian politics gives President Tinubu a
significant advantage. The new alliance will also have to navigate the considerable egos of its two leaders and decide who will ultimately lead the presidential ticket. The ruling APC has dismissed the new coalition as politically insignificant, but the move has undeniably set the stage for a dramatic and high-stakes election season.
