PM OUSTED: Labour Meltdown Explodes

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation on June 22, 2026, ended a collapse that had been building for months — driven by election disasters, cabinet walkouts, and a party that had simply stopped believing in him.

Story Highlights

  • Starmer formally resigned as UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader on June 22, 2026, after months of internal revolt.
  • Over 80 Labour members of parliament had called for his removal by May 2026, with cabinet ministers joining the push.
  • Labour lost nearly 1,500 council seats in local elections and suffered historic defeats in Wales and Scotland.
  • Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won a by-election with 54.8% of the vote and quickly announced a run for Labour leader.

A Slow-Motion Fall From Power

Starmer’s exit did not happen overnight. The pressure started building well before his June 22 announcement. As early as February 2026, Scotland’s Labour leader publicly called for him to resign. By May, more than 80 Labour members of parliament had demanded he set a departure date. Four government aides quit in a single day, urging him to begin an “orderly transition.” Even his own Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, privately pushed him to announce a timetable for leaving.

Starmer tried to hold on. He told his party he would “get on with governing” and challenged critics to formally trigger a leadership contest. More than 100 Labour members of parliament signed a statement saying “this is no time for a leadership contest.” But the dam kept leaking. Junior ministers Amita Bambrah and Jess Phillips resigned. His top aide had already left. By the time he walked outside 10 Downing Street on June 22, the outcome had long been decided.

Election Losses Sealed His Fate

The numbers tell the story clearly. Labour lost nearly 1,500 council seats in local elections across England and surrendered control of 40 councils. Overall, the party lost 59% of the local seats it had defended since 2024. In Wales, Labour lost control of the Welsh Senedd for the first time ever, with its vote share collapsing to just 11.1%. In Scotland, Labour recorded its worst result in a Scottish Parliament election, winning only 17 of 129 seats.

Starmer’s personal approval rating fell to -40%, making him less popular than every recent prime minister except Liz Truss at a comparable point in office. Analysts noted he had become more unpopular than the string of Conservative prime ministers who cycled through Downing Street in the years before him. Hundreds of Labour members of parliament faced the realistic prospect of losing their seats at the next general election, scheduled for 2029. That threat focused minds fast.

Burnham Steps In as the Frontrunner

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, had been eyeing the leadership since at least September 2025. Labour’s party machine initially blocked him from running in an earlier by-election in Gorton and Denton — a seat the party then lost to the Green Party. This time, a sitting member of parliament vacated his Makerfield seat specifically to let Burnham run. On June 18, Burnham won that by-election with 54.8% of the vote, earning more ballots than all other candidates combined.

A YouGov poll of Labour members taken before the resignation showed 47% ranked Burnham as their first choice for leader, compared to 31% for Starmer. A full 59% placed Burnham above Starmer in their preferences. Burnham declared his candidacy for Labour leader on the same day Starmer resigned. Nominations for the leadership contest open July 9 and close July 16, 2026. Starmer said he will remain as prime minister until the process concludes and pledged to fully support whoever succeeds him.

What This Means for Britain

The broader picture is striking. Nigel Farage’s Reform Party has surged to become the largest party in the UK Parliament, winning the Makerfield by-election’s surrounding region with dominant vote shares. Labour MPs now openly describe Burnham as the only candidate capable of countering Reform’s rise. Britain has now cycled through six prime ministers in roughly ten years — a sign of deep political instability on the left and right alike. The next leader inherits a party in crisis and a country watching closely.
